Golf Story Of The Month

I was laying awake at about 4:30 the other morning, just listening to the inner sounds of my sinus' popping and squeaking, when a thought popped into my mind. I knew it wasn't my sinuses. It was definitely further inside my head. Anyway...I figured out I have been playing golf pretty steadily since l967, averaging two times each week. I play more now than years ago, but I think twice a week as an average is pretty close. That's about 3,536 rounds of golf. Each round of golf has four par three holes - again on average. That's 14,144 chances that I've had to hit the ball into the hole on the first try. Barring a fluke where the ball bounces off a tree, building, person, passing car full of Nuns or whatever, it's not all that easy. You do have to pick the right club and hit the ball in the right direction. You'd think you could do it once a year or so. I've done it exactly ONCE in over 14,000 attempts. And it took me 30 years to do it. That means my next hole-in-one isn't due until the year 2028.

It should be easier then because I'll be playing those short executive courses.

ESCONDIDO, CA - After 35 years in golf course architecture, Cal Olson faced perhaps his most unique challenge.

Olson was asked to design Reidy Creek Golf Course, an upscale par-three course on about 65 acres of rolling hills and parkland in rural Escondido that is owned by the City of Escondido and managed by JC Resorts. The course opened to the public on July 1, 2002.

"Our vision and our goal was to create 18 par-three holes that were memorable," said Olson, whose company, Cal Olson Golf Architecture, is located in San Juan Capistrano, CA. "We believe we have achieved that goal.

"The first thing you need to know is that this is not a par-three course as most of us think of a par-three course. We wanted variation and challenge, and didn't want any holes that were flat and mundane. The greens are contoured and the bunkers are what you find on any championship course. We hope Reidy Creek is as much fun to play as it was to design."

Reidy Creek is perhaps California's answer to the Threetops Course at the Treetops Resort in Gaylord, MI. Lee Trevino collected $1 million for making a hole in one last year at Threetops in the Par-3 Challenge, a made-for-television event shown on ESPN, and Fred Couples walked away with $410,000 after taking all the skins in this year's event.

Reidy Creek's competition for best par-three course in California might come from the Peter Hay Course at Pebble Beach, designed by Hay and opened in 1957, and the Cliffs Course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf, which opened in 1994.

Since Escondido is about 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, this might be the best inland par-three course in the state.

Olson's previous credits include Golf du Parcours des Riviers in Quebec, Canada; Sierra Star Resort in Mammoth Lakes, CA; Desiderata by the Sea of Cortez in Baja, Mexico; Aviara Resort and Country Club in Carlsbad, CA; Dong Jin Golf and Country Club in South Korea, and Casa Blanca Golf Club in Mesquite, NV.

But this is something entirely different.

Among the dozens of courses nearby are Doubletree Carmel Highland Resort, the Vineyard at Escondido, Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, Rancho Bernardo Inn and Country Club, Morgan Run Resort and Club, Warner Springs Ranch Golf Course, Pala Mesa Resort, Lawrence Welk Resort Center, Mount Woodson Golf Course and Torrey Pines Golf Course where the PGA Tour plays the Buick Invitational.

But Reidy Creek offers the golfer something those outstanding championship courses can't: 18 chances for that elusive hole in one.
