Golf Wind

As with any sport played in the outdoors, golf is subject to the weather elements. Wind is one weather condition that can wreak havoc on a golfer’s game. Unfortunately golf games are not delayed because of wind and golfers are forced to play during windy days. Just because you are playing in the wind doesn’t mean that your game has to suffer. There are a few simple technique modifications and drills that can help you to play in the wind like a pro.

The key to playing in the wind is to know what to expect and to make a few modifications to your game to ensure that the wind does not take control of your shots. As you become more experienced, you will improve your game in the wind tremendously but this article will serve to offer a few pointers to golfers who do not have a great deal of experience playing in windy conditions.

One simple tip for adjusting your stance can help you to improve your game in the wind. Widening your stance by two to three inches can help you out tremendously when you are playing in windy conditions. This stance modification is helpful because it makes you more stable and hinders your leg motion. By stifling your leg movements you allow yourself to have a shallower swing which is critical to golfing success in the wind.

As previously mentioned, a shallower swing can help you out when you are playing golf in the wind. A shallow swing puts less backspin on the ball and this is helpful because too much backspin could cause the wind to carry the ball upwards instead of forwards. When this happens you lose distance on your drive. One way to keep your swing shallow and avoid putting too much backspin on your ball is to move the ball back about two inches in your stance.

Another tip for playing golf in the wind is to lower your grip and swing with less force into the wind. This technique modification will also help you to put less backspin on the ball and will also allow for more consistent contact with the ball. Both of which will help you when you are playing in the wind.

One way to improve your game in the wind is to practice hitting low and controlled shots. When the conditions are windy keeping the ball low and controlled will be very beneficial to your game. One way to practice this is with a simple, short range drill. Try setting up clothesline that is 18 inches above the ground and approximately eight feet in front of you. Practice hitting the ball so that it sails just under the clothesline. This drill will condition you to hit the ball low which is beneficial in windy conditions.

Following these tips may help to improve your game in the wind but there is no substitute for experience. The more you play in windy conditions, the more likely you are to be successful.
