What's the story behind your "short stick?" Is it too long and were you penny-pinching when you borrowed it, found it, bought it or maybe even stole it?
At least 45 percent of your score is typically played with the shortest club in the golf bag. This is of course the putter, but the amount of money the average golfer spends on drivers compared to putters is surprising. For example, a Taylor Made R7 with interchangeable weighting or a Callaway Fusion Driver is used maybe 12 times per 18 holes of play, whereas the putter can be used around 30 times, all the while being 10 percent the cost of the driver.
Every time I go out I see a slew of golfers with all the latest in driver technologies, but they have outdated and cheap putters in their bag. Attitudes like this make me wonder if these guys even give a damn about their score at all.
It isn't necessary to go out and pay a fortune to get the right putter. You need to focus on one that is properly fitted for you, one that you can quickly become comfortable with, and one you can instantly trust. You have to know your putter if you want to hole more putts.
Another crucial point when it comes to putters is that the well known 35 inch standard putter length is only a guide. It is amazing how many golfers aren't aware that the length can be changed to fit them better.
Understand this: 35 inches is only a gauge; you want to customize the length to fit your style. Take a look at Phil Mickelson; he's approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall and uses a putter that is 33 inches in length.
Think of buying a fishing rod. When you go into Sam's bait and tackle for a custom fishing rod, Sam is going to take all your measurements, determine your strength and find out what kind of fish you are out for before he starts to build the perfect rod for you. There really is no such thing as a "custom" rod off the shelf. A true custom is a blank pole that needs shaping and cutting to give its owner an exact feel and the best possible results.
A similar attitude needs to be taken when looking for a new golf putter. Get one that suits you, and you will improve your game.
Take Dead Aim with your Driver:
The amount of poor alignment one can find, even among serious golfers, can be quite interesting.
One can agree with Harvey Pennick who always said "take dead aim," and who also believed that most problems found in the swing were really just compensation for a poor alignment.
Two of the best competitors to ever play the game, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, both visualize a spot on the ground between the ball and the target. Then they align their clubface to this imaginary point and get their body into the appropriate position in regards to this point.
Most golfers do the opposite and line up their body before they line up the clubface. If you need your play to be spot on, look for the spot the next time you are on the course.
